2024 Harvest 5

Howdy folks and welcome to week 5 of your Tumbleweed CSA. Not to worry there is NO MORE BOK CHOY!! We understand that getting the same things over and over again can get old, however, we are in a position to harvest what’s ready and in season when it’s available. If you want more bok choy we’ll have it for a few more weeks at the farmers market but you won’t be getting it in your box for a while. Hopefully distance makes the heart grow fonder and when it’s available again in the fall you’ll be ready!

This week we’re excited to debut the first harvest of our spring broccoli. Broccoli can be a pretty finicky veggie for us to grow here at the farm and over the years we’ve had our ups and downs. However, the spring weather has been ideal for the broccoli and it’s looking great! We hope you all are as excited as we are about this veggie!

The spinach is coming in hot again along with more arugula, romaine lettuce (this makes the best Caesar salad ever!) radishes, collard greens (this will be the last week of collards for a while) and scallions. We hope you all are enjoying the spring bounty.

Harvest 5

  1. Romaine Lettuce—It’s high in folate (if you’re suffering from allergies this season eat this green up!) It’s also a good source of copper and vitamins A, K and C.

  2. Radishes—are a rich source of magnesium, potassium and vitamin C. They have been studied and results confirm that they likely alter the way cancer cells reproduce so they may reduce cancer risk. They are full of fiber and for their tiny size contain a lot of health benefits. Remove the greens from these to help keep the roots crisp for storing.

  3. Spinach— rich in iron, potassium, vitamins C & E, and magnesium. Spinach can also aid in digestion and has anticancer properties. Eat this veggie up!!

  4. Scallions—Great for overall immune health. Scallions are a good source of vitamin C and a flavonoid called quercetin. Both can strengthen your immune system and help it fight illnesses.

  5. Arugula—Arugula is thought to be one of the most nutrient dense leafy green veggies. It’s high in calcium, potassium, folate, and vitamins A, C, and K. It’s also an excellent source of phytochemicals like flavonoids and glucosinolates that can scavenge free radicals and offer anticancer properties. 

  6. Collard Greens—not only are they high in vitamin K they are also a good source of cancer fighting compounds. They are rich in glucosinolates which is a sulfur-containing compound which is thought to help stop cancer process at different stages of development. Pretty rad!

  7. Broccoli—Broccoli contains many vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. Broccoli’s benefits include helping reduce inflammation, keeping blood sugar stable, and strengthening the immune system.

Howdy folks and welcome to week four of your Tumbleweed CSA. It’s starting to feel like late spring here with the arrival of carrots and kohlrabi (two of our favorite veggies!) If kohlrabi is a new vegetable for you than you are in for a treat! Sure it might look intimidating but don’t let that discourage you. It’s one of the most refreshing veggies we grow. It’s crispy, mild and tastes great raw or cooked (though I prefer raw). My kids love it sliced into sticks and sprinkled with sea salt and nutritional yeast. It’s also a great vehicle for dipping into hummus or any sauce you’ve got on hand. You need to peel it before eating and the best way to peel it is with a sharp knife. Then you can slice it into thin rounds and then into “sticks”. I’ve got a few recipes below for you to try too if you need inspiration.

We’re excited for the first carrots of the season along with more arugula, spinach, turnips, bok choy, head head lettuce and garlic scapes. This will probably be the last week for bok choy for a while (I’m sure you’re all sick of it by now!!) and some new crops are on the horizon. The fields continue to look good and we’re really happy with the weather forecast this week.

Harvest 4

  1. Bok ChoyFull of anti-cancer properties such as Vitamins C & E, beta carotene, and selenium which is thought to slow the growth rate of tumors.

  2. Head Lettuce— A rich source of vitamins A, K and folate. Also a good anti- inflammatory leafy green.

  3. Turnips—Rich in vitamins and minerals turnips are high in antioxidants which help provide anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antibacterial effects, among other benefits. The greens boast a whole list of their own nutritional values but the biggest ones are that they’re high in vitamin A and calcium. Please remove the greens from the turnips and store them separately so the roots don’t get soft.

  4. Carrots—Rich in beta-carotene which your body converts into Vitamin A. This vitamin is important for vision, bone and immune function. Carrots are also high in antioxidants and important minerals for overall body health. Remove the greens on the carrots before storing them so they don’t go soft.

  5. Arugula—Arugula is thought to be one of the most nutrient dense leafy green veggies. It’s high in calcium, potassium, folate, and vitamins A, C, and K. It’s also an excellent source of phytochemicals like flavonoids and glucosinolates that can scavenge free radicals and offer anticancer properties. 

  6. Garlic Scapesthe list of health benefits is almost too long!! It’s anti-fungal, anti- inflammatory, boosts immune health, and is full of antioxidants! Just eat garlic with every meal!

  8. Kohlrabi—Kohlrabi is great for gut health as it contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. It also contains a wide array of antioxidants, such as vitamin C, anthocyanins, isothiocyanates, and glucosinolates. These plant compounds protect your cells against free radical damage that may otherwise increase your risk of disease.

Howdy folks and welcome to week 3 of your Tumbleweed Farm CSA. We’re excited to debut a few new items this week. The first outdoor spinach of the season along with the garlic scapes! If you aren’t familiar with garlic scapes you’re in for a treat. They are the flowering part of the hard neck garlic plant and they are so flavorful and pungent. You can use them the same way you’d use a bunch of scallions. They’re great raw and cooked. Any recipe that calls for a clove of garlic you can swap a garlic scape for. There’s a few recipes below to help inspire you if you’re interested.

Things out in the fields have been cold and wet. We worked hard yesterday in the rain to get the harvest all picked. The good news is that we’ve been able to take a break from irrigating and it looks like warm weather is on the way. The plants are happy out there but a little warm sunshine is needed for some of our later spring crops to start cranking!
